Creosote may be the black or brown combustion residue that collects around the inner surfaces of your chimney flue liner--and it's highly flammable, not forgetting a carcinogen. Today's stoves and wood-burning fireplace inserts burn at much hotter temperatures than the usual basic fire. Then when I inspect it and demonstrate to them the pictures, Their heart drops simply because they know then that they've a major problem.
